Many of the studio’s films feature strong, highly capable female protagonists that negate conventional gender roles in Japanese fiction and animation. Its works are often characterized by themes such as environmentalism, childhood, pacifism, feminism, and the absence of traditional villains. The fortuitous film studio was founded by Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, Isao Takahata and Yasuyoshi Tokuma in 1985 after the success of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984).
